Igneous rocks are formed when magma comes to the crust of the planet, cools down, and then hardens. It may also happen below the surface of the soil. The types of igneous rocks that we have are, in fact, determined by where the rocks are formed. They can form quickly or take many years to create a solid surface.
1. Glassy and Smooth
One of the most unique features of igneous rocks is their glassy, smooth surface. This forms because of the speed of formation that occurs with these rocks. The hot magma immediately cools down and hardens, creating the surface that we see.
2. Pumice Me
There are two primary types if igneous rocks: basalt and pumice. Basalt is used for buildings and sculptures, but we use pumice very differently. You can find pumice in cement for building, of course, but you’ll also find it in cosmetic products. Some toothpastes even have pumice in them as a cleaning agent.
3. Slow and Hard
Sometimes igneous rocks take a very long time to form. This happens when the rock doesn’t fully escape the heat of the magma, but the temperatures are too cool to prevent the magma from being in liquid form. In these instances, the rocks are more grainy in texture and form granite deposits or a rock called gabbro.
4. Grab Your Gabbro
Gabbro is one of the most profitable types of igneous rocks that form. This is because it is very common to find metals like silver, chromium, or even gold contained within them. It can sometimes be difficult to extract these precious metals, but sometimes large veins of them form during the settling period of the rocks.
5. You’re Standing On It
Much of the crust of the planet is actually made up of igneous rocks. 95% of the world that you’re standing on, in fact, was created because of these rocks. With more than 700 different types having been identified and counting, it is truly amazing what the magma of our planet can form into if given enough time.
