Pros and Cons of Acupuncture

Acupuncture has a history similar to chiropractic treatments, homeopathy and yoga among other concepts that were deemed pseudo science and even unscientific nonsense by many. It wasn’t until the latter half of the twentieth century that these practices became legitimized, partly due to endorsement of credible doctors and partly due to scientific backing. Today, chiropractic treatments are regarded as holistic, yoga is physically effective and therapeutic, homeopathy is a solution for many health concerns and acupuncture does have a plethora of benefits to offer.

List of Pros of Acupuncture

1. Acupuncture offers relief from various kinds of pain.
It could be a muscle sprain or a musculoskeletal pain. It may be a pinched nerve or a referred pain caused by some medical condition or physiological problem. Acupuncture treatments are a special therapy. You are made to lie down and relax as the therapist finds your pressure points. The facilities are usually state of the art and have a very friendly, welcoming and warm ambience. As you relax, the therapist inserts needles at the strategic places or pressure points. These are just subcutaneous piercings as the needles don’t really pinch any muscle as such.

2. Acupuncture relaxes you.
It increases blood circulation. It also reduces blood pressure. Effectively, it relaxes the body and the mind, hence having an impact on stress. Many people opt for acupuncture just to get some relief from stress, even if they are not in any kind of pain.

3. Acupuncture can increase mobility.
It helps in cases of chronic pain, such as that resulting from arthritis by increasing mobility.

List of Cons of Acupuncture

1. Acupuncture is risky if you don’t opt for an expert.
Unless you have trained hands inserting the needles or choosing the pressure points, if wrong needles are used or if the depth of the piercing is not appropriate, then there can be some serious side effects, including injuries.

2. People under certain medications may not be deemed suitable for acupuncture.
There can be some side effects. People who have bleeding disorder or are consuming blood thinning medications should not opt for acupuncture.

3. Certain cons of acupuncture are rather nerve wracking but they are not a huge concern if you have a credible therapist.
However, the needle breaking inside the body, tissues rupturing or nerves getting pressed and pinched can pose some serious complexities.

Most of the cons of acupuncture can be done away with if you choose an expert and a credible facility. Don’t try acupuncture yourself and don’t let untrained hands try their unproven skills on you.
