Everyone loves music. Who wouldn’t? For some, music is like a form of salve that soothes their nerves during the most stressful of days while for others, it is something that gives more life to their life. However, certain laws on music censorship have been passed in order to protect the listeners, especially the minors, from the negative feelings, messages, and language used in some songs. While there is a good side to it, there are people who are adamant about the need for music censorship.

Should music of today really be censored? How can it affect the listeners and music lovers?

The 5 Pros of Music Censorship

There are several good things associated to music censorship, including the following:

1. Mainstream music is representing the whole country and lyrics that are barbaric can give any country an equally barbaric image.

2. Young and impressionable children are going to be exposed to situations and materials which they can misinterpret and cannot completely process.

3. Phrases usually utilized in famous music tend to have very sad and tender realities. Repeating the lyrics by those teens that are not aware about the real severity is very difficult and insensitive for the public environments.

4. Freedom still has limits and those lyrics that are offensive and threatening must never be glorified by the public.

5. Even though this sounds self-explanatory, people working in the music industry will always have the same goal of selling their music to the public. The changing or downplay of certain words might be needed for this business to achieve the goal of earning more profit.

The 5 Cons of Music Censorship

Here are the bad things about music censorship:

1. Music that has lyrics that are completely up to interpretation have been censored by the music industry and radio stations, even though the lyrics are actually acceptable, concretely speaking. It only goes to say that the mind is at times dirtier compared to the lyrics itself.

2. Perhaps, music is the most accessible art form in this world, used by people regularly to gain inspiration, cope with different issues and to raise moral. Music has endless possibilities and you can even consider this is the perfect freedom example.

3. Even during the most sensitive times, like the 9/11, songs have been banned from the radio, even those that do have not anything to do with the incident that took place. It only shows that the music industry today has become limiting to musical freedoms and even overbearing.

4. All teenagers undergo experimental phases during which they discover life’s dark realities. These realities, even though not always, usually end after some time.

5. Through music, they can get the help they needed for them to learn about those things which they can discuss with their parents and music censorship will only make the said process harder to go through.

In most cases, banned music or creation of the edited music is being ignored, with people still getting those uncensored versions. This just questions the need for censorship when listeners can still access what has been removed.
