Advantages and Disadvantages of Hydroelectric Energy

The situation of the Mother Nature is deteriorating little by little these days. The storms and hurricanes are getting stronger and stronger as time passes by. Issues on flashflood also flooded the news headlines; there are numerous cases of major earth quakes and tsunamis all over the world. The effects of climate change are really becoming unimaginable.

Situations like this have began sounding the alarm in a global basis. People are becoming aware of its causes and its consequences. The need to act and to resolve this issue is a must that almost every government in the world must act.

One of the foreseen cause of all of this is the unwisely use of natural resources and wrong utilization of energy sources such as gas and nuclear power plants. Therefore the hunt for energy sources alternatives is on. One of the most viable options of different authorities all over the world is the use of hydroelectric energy. They think that this is the best solution for the toughest problem the world has ever encountered. It sounds so good to be true and by just hearing the world hydroelectric, probably, the first thing that comes to your mind is that, it is eco-friendly. But, is it? Well, find out here and know more about the advantages and disadvantages of Hydroelectric Energy.

Disadvantages of Hydroelectric Energy

1. Negative impact on the environment – Using a natural way of producing enough energy can still bring a negative impact on the environment. How? By simply constructing the site on its preferred location, it imposes threat to the natural habitat of many marine lives. It can also cause erosion and flooding in nearby area if not planned well. This already happened in three gorges dam in other countries.

2. Perish archeological sites and it can change the face of the planet tremendously – The construction of hydroelectric power plants can submerge vast area of archeological sites and it can also change the course of water streams leading to the destruction of some scenic views in a particular place.

3. Possible relocation of residents – It can also cause to transfer residents on the affected area of construction sites leading to a negative impact on the livelihood of many families.

Advantages of Hydroelectric Power

1. Hydroelectric power plants are equivalent to a dozen or more nuclear power plants – Hydroelectric plants can produce an enormous amount of energy that can supply an entire urban city. This huge amount of generated power can serve the Mother Nature making the hydroelectric power more eco-friendly.

2. Sustainable source – Even if the fossil fuel runs out, hydroelectric power sources will never perish. It’s an unlimited supply and in the world’s situation now, more water is expected because of the melting of the glaciers in the northern hemisphere. 🙂 Meaning there is a lot of water supply to run the hydroelectric power plants.

3. Renewable energy – This requires no further explanation. The source of hydroelectric energy is pretty much renewable.

4. Eco-friendly – Since hydroelectric source is a natural element, there is no emission of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide needed.

Actually, this source of energy has become more and more in demand in different countries across the globe. As long as the utilization of this natural source of energy is properly planned, most probably, the disadvantages could be lessened.
