Ricky Gervais Golden Globe Controversy

Awards shows are designed to celebrate the biggest celebrities and focus on the best performances of the past year. The Golden Globes are not quite the Oscars, but they are the closest thing and celebrate both TV and film. All of the brightest stars put on their best formal wear and strut down the red carpet before the show begins. There are always some surprises when it comes time for the awards to be given out, but Ricky Gervais stole the show long before the first winner was even announced.

British Comedy

It has always been said that British humor is slightly different than American and this was especially true at the 2011 Golden Globes. Ricky Gervais made his fame with the British version of the Office that even gained relevancy and fame in the United States. It is his idea that sparked the American version starring Steve Carrel and Jon Kaminski. Most Golden Globes are almost unwatchable and a bit boring, but the controversy surrounding the opening monologue performed by Gervais made this award show must-see television. The host made the party and caused a bit of a stir by going after the most famous celebrities and stars.

Cruel Humor

Ricky Gervais is widely known for being blunt and not mincing words on the stage, but he took his brash sense of humor to new levels at the Golden Globes. There was no one that was safe from Gervais and he did not just go after the easy targets like most hosts. It seems that Gervais made it a priority to go after A-listers and try to elicit uncomfortable laughter from the star-studded audience. The victims of his cruel humor included Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp, Tim Allen, Charlie Sheen and Bruce Willis. His jokes came quick and left a lot of casualties in their wake.

Awkward Reactions

The best part of Ricky Gervais’s monologue was the cuts to the stunned audience of celebrities that did not know what to do. Their confused stares and sometimes angered expressions made Gervais’s act even more must-see for audiences at home. Gervais was not afraid to ruffle a few feathers and wrote his monologue with the intention of creating a little controversy.

Judging from the reactions of film and television stars they did not appreciate his cruel humor, but the ratings suggest that home audiences couldn’t get enough.
